Background and aim: Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is a hereditary condition in which a minimum of two ectodermal
structures fail to develop. In general, little experience with the long‐term outcome is available due to the rarity of these
syndromes. The purpose of the present systematic review was the comprehensive review of prosthetic approaches in
individuals diagnosed with ED and to give treatment recommendations according to the patients' age and based on the
available evidence.
Methods: The systematic search was performed according to PRISMA. The search took place between 2010 and 2019.
Database search was conducted using MEDLINE, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, ISI, google scholar. The database
was searched with the following keywords: (“ectodermal dysplasia, anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, dental treatment,
prosthetic, prosthodontic, children.
Results: 12 individuals (11 male; one female) diagnosed with ED were included in the present systematic review. Age
mean were 5 years old. The included individuals were classified into age groups: early childhood, aged <6 years (n = 9);
kids, 6‐9 years (n = 3). All individuals were treated with removable prosthetic devices, full dentures were provided in all
patients.
Conclusions: Implant supported over denture can be a functional and esthetic alternative in young children. Treatment
goals should be stepwise defined according to the patients′ age and demands.
