Abstract

Background: Spontaneous abortion is the most common pregnancy complications that can had a bad psychological effect
on the lives of couples seeking to create a baby. In the early stages Continuation of pregnancy, depends progesterone
production by the corpus luteum. Impaired glucose metabolism during pregnancy is the most important diseases in
pregnancy, use of oral progesterone to prevent preterm delivery in pregnant women are widely prescribed by
gynecologists. We decided to study, Effect of oral progesterone (dydrogestron) on incidence of glucose intolerance in
pregnant females with threatened abortion.
Methods: In this prospective study 50 pregnant women who were tested for blood sugar and had normal blood sugar
levels with gestational age less than 14 weeks and complaint threatened abortion, to prevent miscarriage and preterm
delivery, had administration of oral Dydrogesterone 10 mg twice daily. The 50 women who did not use oral
dydrogesterone formed the control group.
Results: The mean ± SD age of the women studied was 28.17 ± 1.23 years. Maximum age 29 years and a minimum age of
24 year. After administration of oral dydrogesteronem, Mothers were tested for blood sugar. The mean ± SD of glucose
was 82.28 ± 8.16 mg / dl and was 78.46 ± 6.65 mg / dl in control group. There were significant differences between the
two groups (P-value = 0.012). 18 (36%) of the patients in the study group had abnormal GCT, glucose tolerance test (GTT)
was performed. The GTT performed in four stages, all 18 patients were within the normal range.
Conclusion: The results of this study shows that administration of oral progesterone can increase blood sugar levels in
women who are treated with progesterone. So the administration of oral progesterone to treat women with threated missabortion should consider the risk factors and screening early to avoid side effects of hyperglycemia in these patients.
