Knowledge and attitude among a group of malaysian dental students towards root canal treatment: A questionnaire study

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the knowledge and attitude among a group of Malaysian dental
students towards root canal treatment.
Material and Methods: A structured questionnaire was given to 55 clinical undergraduate students at AIMST dental
institute. A total of 10 questions related to root canal therapy were designed to evaluate the knowledge and attitude of
dental undergraduate students towards root canal treatment procedure. The questionnaire was in the format of multiple
choice questions and yes/no type questions.
Results: Significant opinions were identified in the following questions: Question 1, Question 3, Question 4, Question 5,
Question 7, Question 7a,Question 7b and Question 9. Minor, but critical observations were noticed in Question 2, Question
8 and Question 10. It is noted that a major percentage of the participants have a commendable level of knowledge and
approach towards root canal procedures.
Conclusion: This study exhibits the skilled level of knowledge and attitude amongst dental undergraduate students based
on the choices selected and predilection for the best response. The participants were highly familiar of root canal
procedures, dental materials, causes leading to obturation failure and pain incidence after obturation since all of these
selections are critical for the success of root canal procedures.
