Multiple Intelligence Activities: An Innovative Strategy to Upgrade Listening and Speaking Skill of Nautical Science LEARNERS – An Empirical Study

Abstract

Though English language is called as the global lingua franca, it is also considered as Queen of the languages in all over
the world. Communication skill is essential in all the fields such education, medical, trade and commerce, etc. This paper
focuses on the importance of communication skill, especially listening and speaking skill in the field of Nautical science.
The basic methodology of this paper is Activity Based Language Teaching. This paper discusses how Gardner’s theory of
Multiple Intelligences facilitates the process of acquiring of language skills. The eight broad categories of Multiple
intelligences are Logical intelligence, Visual intelligence, Bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, Musical intelligence, Linguistic
intelligence, Interpersonal intelligence, Intrapersonal intelligence and Naturalistic intelligence. Multiple Intelligence
activities [MIA] are designed and used as a tool to enhance the listening and speaking skill of the Nautical science learners.
The aim of this paper is to arouse the curiosity in the language acquisition process as well as to enhance the skills of the
learners by implementing the Multiple Intelligence Activities.
